the great food debate

I'm not sure when, where, why, or how, but there seems to suddenly be an influx of people talking about calories and soy milk and organic shit. Food, Inc., and blog posts about unhealthy drinks, 4 year old cheeseburgers, blah blah blah ... I'm over it and quite frankly, it's annoying.

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally aware that this country has a food problem. Fast food is the norm and even "healthy" vegetables really aren't when they're full of pesticides and those that aren't are grown inside a lab under some lamps. But the reason why people in this country are fat assholes isn't because McDonalds is the #1 fast food chain and Starbucks apparently really does put crack in their drinks ... no it's because Americans are stupid and walk/drive/call in orders for this crap ALL.THE.TIME.

I don't know what happened, or if I just had different parents, but I never ate fast food as a kid. Ok let me not say never, but lets just say that McDonalds was given to me as a "reward". For example, I always went to the doctor with my dad because he had Mondays off. So after our checkups, he would treat me to McDonalds. Yeah how many times a year does one get a checkup ... just once. I think chicken nuggets are disgusting because I never had them as a kid. (And i won't lie, once McDonalds announced they were using "real chicken" for their nuggets, I was even more disgusted. Wtf were they using before?!) My parents never put chinese food in front of me for dinner and french fries were made at home, not picked up through a drive through. Where my parents fell the most was pizza and even that was semi rare, and lets face it, cheese pizza is still healthier than a big mac. I'm not saying that my parents are the model of how to feed your kids but I was never fat or unhealthy, so whatever they did, they did right (or so I think).

Fast forward to today and you have parents crying on TV because their 17 year old is 800 pounds. Everyone blames the fast food joints and fails to realize that that kid gets the food from the parent. It makes me cringe when I see babies holding a Burger King bag and sipping soda. Seriously, it does. Trust me, I love fast food but how stupid are you that you think giving a child fast food on a normal basis is a good idea. Kids are growing and fast food has NO nutritional value, and then people wonder why there are health problems and such. Kids are like plants ... plants need water and sun to grow. Not sun and soda ... give a plant some pepsi instead of water and guess what, it's dead.

Now on to adults and this sudden "health food" craze. Every single day on my FB feed I see new posts about all the dangers of food and people piggy-backing off of it. The fact that these individuals are choosing a healthier lifestyle doesn't upset me in the least. Kudos to them for being more aware; I guess what makes me laugh is the announcement as if the info is brand new. Cheeseburgers aren't good for you?! You don't say! Vitamin water isn't really water?! No shit (although I will admit I reposted that blog because it made me laugh and I didn't really know how soda-like it really was). Starbucks whipped chocolate caramel syrup drinks are high in sugar? ... :: gasp ::

:: rolls eyes ::

Now, what may seem hypocritical is that I love food ... all sorts of it. I am by no means a health food freak and that can be proven by the fact that last week I craved a mexican burger at 10pm and went to the diner and ate one. But I am not that painfully naive and at this day of age, with all of the info out there, it surprises me that there are people that are. I know someone who was so surprised when she lost weight by no longer drinking starbucks every.single.day. Are you serious? No one goes to starbucks for a regular cup of coffee (which is actually not that good, by the way). Everyone is a victim to the foo-foo shit they sell; but if my drink of choice is a white chocolate mocha with whipped cream and caramel on top. Um. What part of that doesn't scream SUGAR. I laugh when people stop drinking coffee to be "more healthy". The coffee isn't the problem my friends, it's the 20 packs of sugar you throw in it. I refuse to live off of soy and turkey substitutes but I also refuse to be a fat, unhealthy f*ck. And in order to do that, I've had to grow up (for lack of a better word) and come to terms with the fact that all of that deliciousness is bad for you (and my wallet ... let's face it I like money and spending $6 on coffee every day is not cool to me).

sigh

For a country that's so advanced, its residents are idiots. The fact is that everything is bad for you in some way, and while I personally think that turning to a pure organic diet is extreme (at least for me it is), I also know that everything is ok *in moderation*. I will continue to eat beef and burgers and dark chocolate, mixed in with water and veggies. I will drink my coffee every day but avoid soda. I will not be judged! (lol)

I won't lie when I say that if they ever find something bad with organic diets, I will laugh. That would be some shit.
